Mr. Coe’s Story
Richard Coe was born in Wichita, Kansas, in 1949, and has spent nearly his entire life in his hometown. He graduated from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1971 and moved to Chicago where he earned an MBA from The University of Chicago. During his time in Chicago, Richard worked at Continental Bank, the city’s largest at the time, rising to the position of Second Vice President. In January 1977, the most significant moment in his life occurred when Richard decided to make Jesus the central focus of his life.
Richard returned to Wichita in early 1978 where he was discipled by spiritual mentors, including Pastor Roger Fredrikson and Judge Ron Rogg. For several years, Richard devoted himself to Bible study, scripture memory, and a pursuit of deep spiritual knowledge. However, he found that his head knowledge of the Word outpaced his experiential and relational understanding. In some ways he became religious, legalistic, and judgmental. Richard was rescued and transformed by the love of family and friends. Richard and Deb have been married since 1982, raised two sons, David and Doug, and have 5 grandchildren.

Richard was one of the first in Kansas to earn the designation of CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, completing those requirements in 1983. He had affiliated with MassMutual and served as Investment Specialist for the Wichita office of MML Investors Services. Later he was a Registered Principal and Investment Advisor Representative of Cambridge Investment Research. He founded Coe Financial Services, a registered investment advisory business, which he successfully ran until its sale in 2020. Richard also served as President of the Financial Planning Association of Kansas and of the Wichita Estate Planning Council and as Treasurer of the Downtown Wichita Rotary Club.
A turning point in Richard’s life came after a battle with acute insomnia in the fall of 2011. Through that experience, he encountered a renewed and deeper life in Christ. Bible verses like Galatians 2:20 and 2 Corinthians 5:17, which he had memorized years earlier, began to take root in his heart, leading him to a fuller understanding of grace and the opening of a new chapter in his spiritual journey.
Today, Richard continues to experience the love of God in profound ways and remains actively engaged as a friend to others, particularly younger men. He cherishes the ongoing opportunities to pass on the love, grace and wisdom that he has received over the decades.
